Benson Pia: A Journey from the Pit to the Pulpit

In the heart of the Wapenamanda District in Enga Province, surrounded by the tall shadows of ancient gum trees, lies the tranquil village of Mambisanda—a peaceful land full of natural beauty and quiet charm. But from this peaceful place came the troubled beginnings of a young man named Benson Pia.

As a boy, Benson had potential. But like many young people, he made choices that led him away from school, away from his family’s hopes, and eventually, away from himself. He became a high school dropout, and soon after, his life took a sharp turn into a dark world of drugs and alcohol.

His reputation in the community changed. Once known as a quiet boy from a humble village, he became widely recognized as one of the worst drug addicts in Mambisanda. His behaviors shocked even those who once cared deeply for him. His life was spiraling out of control.

Eventually, Benson left home and moved to Port Moresby, hoping to find something better. But life in the city was not kind to him. The temptations were greater, and the streets were rougher. He drank heavily, wandered without direction, and sunk deeper into hopelessness.

But even in the deepest darkness, God can shine His light.

Alone and empty, Benson came to a painful realization: he had no future living the way he was. He had reached his breaking point. And at that lowest moment, he did something that would change his life forever — he turned to God.

Benson began attending Reformation Ministries Churches Network (RMCN) in Port Moresby. It wasn’t easy at first. Years of addiction don’t vanish overnight. But he kept going. He kept praying. He listened to the Word of God. And slowly but surely, his heart began to change.

The young man once feared in his community for his reckless behavior began to transform into a young man filled with peace, humility, and purpose.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Benson didn’t stop at just changing spiritually. He knew he had to rebuild his whole life—starting with his education. With new courage, he returned to Enga Province and enrolled at St. Paul’s Lutheran Secondary School Pausa. Many people doubted him. Some thought he would drop out again. But this time, he was different.

Fueled by faith and determination, Benson successfully completed Grades 10, 11, and 12—a milestone he once thought impossible.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13

As Benson continued walking faithfully with God, his commitment didn’t go unnoticed. The church saw the deep transformation in him—his discipline, his testimony, his heart for others—and soon, he was appointed as a pastor within RMCN.

He was posted to 14 Mile in Port Moresby, where he now leads and serves as a pastor, preaching the Word of God and helping others who, like him, are lost and searching for hope.

But Benson wasn’t done yet. While ministering to others, he also made the decision to pursue further education. He enrolled in an online program with the Australian Education Services and studied for a Diploma in Accounting.

Through sacrifice, discipline, and the grace of God, he graduated successfully—a true symbol of redemption and possibility.

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” – Proverbs 16:3

To every young man or woman in Papua New Guinea—whether in the streets, in the villages, or in the cities—this story is for you.

Maybe you’ve dropped out of school.
Maybe you’ve turned to drugs or alcohol.
Maybe you feel rejected, hopeless, or broken.

But listen carefully: your story is not over.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

You can choose to change your path. Just like Benson did, you can turn back to God. The journey won’t be easy—but it will be worth it. With faith, determination, and a heart that’s ready to be transformed, you too can rise from the pit to the pulpit—from brokenness to purpose.

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26

Benson Pia’s story is a testimony.

From being one of the most feared drug addicts in his village to becoming a respected pastor and graduate, his life proves that God can change anyone. You are not too far gone. You are not too lost. There is hope for you.

Turn to God. Change your story. Live your purpose.
