Urgent Flood Update: Mambisanda Immanuel Lutheran Rural Hospital - Timin Hydro Impact.

An emergency situation has unfolded at Mambisanda Immanuel Lutheran Rural Hospital following a night of torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding of the Timin River. This event has critically damaged the hospital's long-standing and vital Timin Hydro power system, placing the facility and the communities it serves in a precarious position.

For over seven decades, Mambisanda Hospital, serving the Wapenamanda District of Enga Province and the wider Papua New Guinea population, has relied on the Timin Hydro for its uninterrupted power supply. This system, a testament to the foresight of the American Lutheran Missionaries who established it in the early 1960s, has been a beacon of reliability in a region frequently challenged by inconsistent power infrastructure.

The severity of last night’s flood has inflicted substantial damage on two key components of the hydro system:

  • The Turbine House: Situated on the elevated riverbank, the turbine house has been catastrophically affected by a landslide. The foundation of the structure has been compromised, leaving the building suspended precariously over the steep drop to the river. The erosion caused by the floodwaters has destabilized the surrounding terrain, and the turbine house is now in imminent danger of collapsing into the river if further flooding occurs. This critical piece of infrastructure, housing the turbines that generate electricity, is now rendered practically unusable and faces the risk of complete destruction.
  • The Dam Area: The dam area, which regulates the flow of water to the turbines, has also sustained significant damage. The protective concrete sidewalls, designed to withstand the river’s force, have been fractured and partially washed away. This leaves the dam structure highly vulnerable to future flood events. With the protective barriers compromised, the integrity of the dam is severely threatened, potentially leading to further erosion and a catastrophic failure if the river rises again. The damaged walls no longer provide adequate protection from the river's force.

The implications of this damage are profound. The Timin Hydro has been the lifeblood of Mambisanda Hospital, ensuring consistent power for essential medical equipment, lighting, and other critical services. The loss or significant disruption of this power source will severely impact the hospital’s ability to provide healthcare to the thousands of people who depend on it.

Currently, the hospital staff and local community members are working to assess the full extent of the damage and to develop contingency plans. However, the scale of the destruction presents a significant challenge. The immediate priority is to secure the affected areas and to prevent further damage. Long-term solutions will require substantial resources and expertise to rebuild the hydro system and restore its functionality.

This is a critical situation that demands urgent attention. The community is calling for prayers and support as they grapple with the consequences of this devastating flood. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
